Alan Thompson, 77, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023, unexpectedly at his home in Huxley.
Alan's Celebration of Life will be held on his birthday, Sunday, September 17th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kelley Community Center, 1111 Grace Street, Kelley, Iowa 50134.
Alan Stanley Thompson was born September 17, 1945, in Ames, Iowa to Stanley and Edna (Sampson) Thompson. He grew up in Huxley and the surrounding areas where he received his education. Following high school, Alan served in the United States Army in Vietnam until he was honorably discharged.
On August 23, 1968, Alan was united in marriage to Marilyn Dianne Barnes. The couple made their home in Huxley, Ames, Kelley, an acreage near Kelley, Alleman, and most recently settled in Huxley. Alan and Marilyn are blessed with three sons, Scott, Chris and Tim.
Alan made his career primary employed for the City of Ames as a Parks Specialist in the Parks and Recreations Division. A couple notable projects Alan lead were the Adopt-A-Garden, the limestone signage seen around the Ames parks. And upgrading various shelters and other park facilities. Alan also owned and operated along with his brothers, Thompson Brothers Sodding in the 70's and 80's. Most recently, Alan and Marilyn owned Spice Rax LLC. the couple traveled to craft and trade shows where they met many friends and shared their products with others. In 2015, Alan had the honor of joining some of his fellow veterans in the Freedom Flight to Washington, DC.
Alan's hobbies consisted of the work he did every day, remodeling the family homes, construction and landscape projects, and perfecting his garden areas. Years ago, he earned a Master Gardener Certificate and Landscape design as well as participating in the annual shade tree conferences. Alan's creative side shined when he wrote stories and drew cartoons. They were highlighted in the Des Moines Register, Ames Tribune, and Iowa State's Toon's magazine.
Most of all, it's known that Alan loved investing in quality time with his wife, sons and grandson, building a business idea, working on projects together, or attending Trevor's various sporting events.
Alan will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Thompson; sons, Scott (Dawn) Thompson, Chris Thompson, and Tim Thompson; grandson, Trevor Thompson; and siblings, Betty Rae Netcott, Gary Thompson, Elaine (Whitey) Ilvess, Marj (Mike) Majors, Steven Thompson, and Sandra Bell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Edna Thompson; siblings, Don Thompson, and Shirley Gumtau; and his parents-in-law, Roland and Phyllis Barnes.
