Sharon Anne Guber, educator extraordinaire, died unexpectedly February 23, 2020. She forged a 75-year trail of laughter, generosity, compassion, and wisdom. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. According to her wishes, Sharon was cremated. Some of her ashes will be scattered in the Pacific Ocean and some will stay in Ames.

Sharon was born on August 23, 1945, to Anne Sikora Guber and Steve Alexander Guber at Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana. She attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary and Hammond High School. Sharon received her BA at Purdue University and received a Master of Education at University of Michigan.

After teaching for a short time in Kentucky and Illinois, Sharon found her true home in Ames, Iowa. She was totally dedicated to the profession of education, teaching physical education for 33 years at Gertrude Fellows Elementary, serving as President of the Ames Education Association, as well as representing staff through leadership in Teacher Rights and Negotiations. Sharon fondly reminisced about former students and loved meeting them as adults. In her disciplined, deliberate classroom, students learned personal skills for which she was fondly remembered.

The elementary students loved when Ms. Guber wore her Ukrainian costume to teach Slavic folk dancing. Sharon appreciated her Ukrainian/Russian/Polish heritage and would even accompany the folk dances by playing her accordion. Thanks to her mother's musical talents of playing the piano, accordion and mandolin, Sharon gained an appreciation of music. She loved playing with her mother, and sister Linda joined in with her alto saxophone. Sharon was proud to bring that music to her students.

Upon retirement in 2003, Sharon taught one class at Iowa State University before realizing that teaching classes was what she had retired from. She began supervising ISU physical education students in Polk and Story County and found that most enjoyable.

Sharon's associations included Iowa State Education Association, Ames Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, North Park Villa, Friendship Force of Central Iowa, and Iowa State University Women's Club (bowling and golf). As a member of the College Creek Neighborhood Sharon worked doggedly for neighborhood quality of life. A neighboring ISU student renter once said, "She's the old lady that helps us do the right thing." Sharon also participated in the Women's March in 2016 and was constantly training people to advocate for themselves.

Sharon traveled to the Golden Triangle of Thailand, Brazil and Mexico. She loved to invite friends to join in the fun at her timeshare, making many trips to Branson, Missouri. She also spent time with friends, camping, whale watching in Alaska, observing koalas and kangaroos in Australia and searching for the world's smallest penguins in New Zealand.

Sharon will be greatly missed as an Ames restaurant "frequent flyer," a great friend, leader, negotiator, researcher, planner, fact checker, golfer, bowler, kayaker and activist. Sharon's belief in representative, participatory government spanned immersing herself in the issues, helping candidates run for office, and working as a poll-worker during elections.

Survivors include her sister, Linda Clarke, niece Brydie Schultz, and great nieces Cassandra and Maren all from Bellingham, Washington; a brother, Bill Guber and wife Lana from San Diego, California; and cousins from across the country.

Her parents, aunts, uncles and one cousin preceded Sharon in death.

Many of Sharon's belongings are being donated to her favorite charities. Memorials may be mailed to Judy Dahlke, 3032 Burnham Dr., Ames, IA 50010. Please pay to the order of The Estate of Sharon Guber. You may designate funds as something for the new Homewood Golf Course Clubhouse (in Ames) or a scholarship through Alpha Delta Kappa. ADK (educator's society) will award scholarship funds to a Story County high school senior who plans to become an educator. He/she would receive the money during his/her junior year in college.

Ames Monument & Cremation Center has been entrusted with the care of Sharon and her family. Tributes and condolences may be expressed online at

Sharon's family and friends would love to read about your memories. Her sister, Linda, and brother Bill thank you for any act of kindness in memory of Sharon.

Simply the finest woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Although it’s been awhile since her passing, I post this as I am dealing with neighborhood issues …. Guess who I have been thinking of and missing? Sharon was the go to person for all sorts of things! To hear her address the Ames city council was an absolute awe inspiring experience…her impeccable research and ability to make cogent arguments was amazing! Missing you so much dear Sharon.🙏🙏🙏

My condolences to Sharon's family. I knew Sharon through Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. She was so dedicated to furthering justice through education and example but it was her ability to dig in on issues of importance that was bar none. Yet, she was, as my folks would say, "common"- the ultimate compliment from my part of Iowa. It means that she believed in our power as community-builders. Yet we were not just common, we were all better for knowing her.

Sharon was a dear heart. Her smile, laughter, energy and dedication to people and causes she honored was tireless. She will be forever missed.

Always the smile....sometimes just for warm hello, other times meant to get your attention to hear the importance working together, once in awhile it was sly and you waited in anticipation to see what might be coming....and always you were glad to be in her presence. Rest In Peace great lady

I was a substitute teacher at Fellows for a number of years. When it was PE day for my class, the students were always happy and anxious to get to the gym to see Ms Guber. Sharon would always be waiting for the class with her welcoming smile and kind voice. The students would enter the gym in an orderly manner because they knew Ms. Gubers rules. When I picked them up after their class was finished the class was lined up and ready to leave the gym. They knew Ms. Guber wanted them to leave in an orderly manner when they walked away to return to their room. They left with "high fives and hugs" for their friend and PE teacher. Sharon was a treasure who left us full of everlasting memories that make us smile.

Ms Guber was my PE teacher at Fellows. She taught me at an early age the importance of being a good team player. I remember getting pulled aside a few times when things weren’t going my team’s way. Ms. Guber always took the time to show us kids the right way. I enjoyed seeing her at Trivia Night later in life as well. Thank you for everything you did to make Ames a better place Ms. Guber. We are all better off for knowing you.

Sharon was a joy to know. I saw her the week before she died. As always her smile was infectious. I was so happy to see her because it had been awhile and I knew she had been through some health issues. She told me she was feeling well and looking forward to golf. Sharon will be greatly missed by so many.

Sharon was a steadying force in the advancement of fairness for all. A calm presence who had the back of every teacher in Ames. I was lucky to count her as a friend and colleague and one of the reasons Fellows Elementary was such a wonderful place in which to work. Her constant friendliness, her work for so many, and her dedication will be missed.

I had the pleasure and honor to work with Sharon on neighborhood issues as a neighborhood association board member and then to engage with her in City Council discussions about neighborhood quality of life. She was a tireless worker and a strong voice for Ames neighborhoods. She will be missed by many, including me, and leaves big shoes to fill. I know that her dogged advocacy has inspired others to step up and make their concerns heard. Sharon's family and close friends have my sincere sympathy. Her loss will be felt throughout the community.

I suspect that I speak for many of Ms. Guber's former students: she was a wonderful role model. She was encouraging and supportive and had an uncanny memory of names and faces. I ran into her a few years ago and was thrilled to see her looking so vibrant and healthy. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Sharon was a dear family friend since the early 80's. She was thoughtful, generous, kind and a joy to be around. She helped me through the loss of my sister, taking me for picnics, lunches, etc. She loved the outdoors and was an avid supporter of the democratic party. She led an active life with her love of camping, canoeing, golfing, and so much more. I can still hear her laughter ringing in my ears. She had a beautiful laugh and smile. She will be missed by so many. She touched countless lives in such a positive way. I am blessed to have known you Sharon Guber. I will miss you and think of you every time I use the camping gear you gave to me or every time I go canoeing, you will forever be in my thoughts. I pray you are with Kathy, playing a round of golf or hiking in heaven. God bless you sweet lady.
Love always,
Evelyn Yoder
