Russell B. Wernet, age 99, of Mason City, died Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Heritage Care & Rehab Center.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 13, 2019, in Mount Vernon Cemetery, rural Swaledale, with Pastor Anjeanette Perkins officiating. Condolences may be expressed online at www.amesmonument.com.
Born July 29, 1919, in Burchinal, Iowa, Russell Blane Wernet was one of eleven children born to Andrew and Marie (Bickford) Wernet. He attended country school through the eighth grade in Mount Vernon Township. In earlier years, Russell helped his father farm in Cerro Gordo County. He later made his home at Duncan Heights Residential Care Facility in Garner and for the past several years resided at Heritage Care& Rehab Center.
Russell is survived by three sisters, Iona Nuehring of Mason City, Iola Maertens of Toledo, and Marcella Gruben of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Don Harbeson of Santa Clarita, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Greta Oettchens, Edith Albers, Bonnie Jensen, Pauline Peterson, and Virginia Harbeson; two brothers, Leonard Wernet and Carroll Wernet; seven brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.
Memorials in honor of Russell may be directed to the family at: Marcella Gruben, 630 S. Indiana, Mason City, IA 50401. Ames Monument & Cremation Center has been entrusted with the care of Russell and his family.
So sorry to hear of Russell's passing. Enjoyed visiting him while he was at the nursing home, quite a character!
